Applying for Journalism Internships? Start With This Amazing List

Journalism students: if you’re looking for an internship or fellowship, consider yourself on deadline.
We’ve reached the end of journalism internship application season. As Poynter explains, this is make-or-break time for early-career journalists:
The most critical period in journalism school is the three-month window stretching from September to November informally known as internship application season. Getting professional experience and making contacts through an internship can mean the difference between landing a job or being unemployed after commencement.

What is on your Mind

From today, you will gain speed like never before. No more stagnation in your life.
Do you know that apart from failing many times to win elections, Abraham Lincoln also failed in business? His health also failed. Yes, he had nervous breakdown. To make things worse, his fiancée died.
One would have expected a man with such bitter experiences to give up on life. Guess what? He never did. Things turned around for him. He became a successful businessman and the number one citizen of his country.
Though everything around him pointed to negativity, his mind was focused on positive outcome that whatever he desired was possible.
Friends, what is on your mind? Do you see yourself overcoming your challenges in your mind, though your situation is saying the contrary? You must be determined that nothing will stop you from achieving your goals this year and beyond.

Don't give up on your dreams

Today, your life is changing for the better. You will experience progress in every area of your life.
It was Alexander the Great who said; ‘Nothing is impossible for a man who is willing to try’. So, I will like ask you, are you willing to try again and again until you get the desired result in that business or career that had failed before?
You can only succeed in any venture if you don’t give up. Remember that great inventor, Thomas Edison who invented the light bulb, among other inventions failed over 1,000 times. He never gave up until he became successful. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th American President also failed severally at polls before he finally won the presidency in 1860.

Words of Inspiration: KDP Author Brenda Rothert

"The best books come from deep within us. Consider your life experiences when you're seeking inspiration for characters and stories. I drew from losing a baby halfway through a pregnancy for one of my characters and from the loss of my dad for another. Readers can connect with characters who go through the same struggles they experience in their own lives. Tapping into how my own losses affected me allowed me to create more emotional, authentic stories. I treasure messages from readers who tell me they've gone through similar losses and that my books helped them find healing." --Brenda Rothert, author of Bound. www.amazon.com

Createspace Resource: judging a Book by its interior

An engaging plot or main objective hooks readers, but poor design choices can lose them. Many eBooks allow readers to choose your book's interior font style and size. That's not the case if you decide to take your eBook to print.
The most important but unassuming decision authors make when designing print interiors is font. And while there are thousands of fonts available, most print books are designed using just a few.
Check out our designers' professional recommendations, and let CreateSpace turn your Microsoft Word document into a professionally designed print interior.www.createspace.com

26 Amazing Writing Residencies You Should Apply for This Year

It’s a dream of many writers: to spend time at a quiet colony or residency where you can focus on your work. But too often the only writers’ colonies we hear about are The MacDowell Colony and Yaddo, prestigious residencies that only accept a tiny percentage of applicants.
The truth is, there are lots of other wonderful writer’s residencies to choose from, many of which are less competitive, so you’re more likely to get accepted.
Our founder, Alexis Grant, enjoyed three highly productive residencies at The Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts & Sciences, and she is convinced that a big reason we don’t hear about the non-MacDowell-level residencies is because the writers who frequent these places aren’t always digitally savvy; rather than participating in online communities or blogging, they spend their time writing.
Here are 26 high-quality writing residencies and retreats you may not know about yet. While some of these are quite selective, others are a little more open with their admission policies.

Little by Little: How to Achieve Your Goal in a Simple Way

Hi friend,

There are many ideas flowing and swirling around in my head. I’m not special because we all have ideas. There are ideas floating and swimming in your head, every day. Of course, some are great and some are bad.

The thing is, you won't know if they are great or not until you actually bring them to life.

I’ve five (almost finished/ get stuck) books.Do you know why I didn’t finish writing them? It’s because there are many things I want to write about. As I am writing one, another idea pops in, and then I drop it, and go to another.

Do you want to be like me? I guess you don’t want that. Of course, you want to be an achiever. You want to be awesome.

So, how can you be one? It’s simple! Just take it bird by bird. By bird by bird, I mean you should take things one step after another. You have to crawl first before you have to walk. That's the philosophy of life. If you try to do it other way around, then you won't achieve anything.

16 Facebook Groups for Writers You Don’t Want to Miss

Whether you’re a freelancer, a blogger, a fiction writer or anything in between, we could all use a little company on the sometimes lonely road known as the writing life.
Maybe you just got your first offer to ghostwrite a book and have no idea what to charge. Maybe your characters refuse to do what you want them to do (isn’t that just like them?), and you could use someone to commiserate with. Maybe it’s after midnight and you’re still up trying to wrestle the words into submission, and you dearly need to be talked down off the ledge.
Whatever the reason, Facebook groups can be a fantastic way for writers to connect, trade advice, swap war stories and find new opportunities. Knowing there are other people out there who “get” what it’s like to be a writer can be a huge comfort, and the chance to share experience and tips with people on all stages of the writing journey is invaluable.
So we polled writers to find out which Facebook groups they personally could not live without. (Want to share this list? Click to tweet it.) Here are the results:

1. The Write Life Community

We’d be remiss if we didn’t tell you about our own Facebook group! Writers of all experience levels can share their struggles and wins, ask each other questions and otherwise support and encourage the community throughout the writing life.

What We Put In, Is What We Get Out

You are about to attract resources, human, financial, material like never before.
I am sure by now; the picture you have envisioned of yourself on December 31st is getting clearer and hopefully richer. Awesome! That is my desire for you. I have no doubt in my mind that if you have been listening and acting on my teachings, that you will achieve your goals.
Why am I speaking so confidently?
Have you ever taken a picture of yourself and then go back to take a look at the picture only to find the picture of a fish instead of yours?
Do you think it is possible for that to happen? If it does, what will you think?
Wouldn’t you ask yourself how that picture of a fish got there instead of yours?
I am sure you would, because the camera would only print out the images in its memory.
Well that is how our minds work. What we put in, is what we get out. We can never get out of our lives what we have not put in it. this last quarter will favour you.

It doesn’t matter how much money you have, if you do not have appreciation and gratitude then you will have trouble finding proper fulfillment.
There is a way to find this fulfillment in your financial condition as long as you are willing to follow a couple of steps. It takes making proper decisions, not those that are unconsciously or spontaneously made, but those that are best suited for your financial condition. This will keep you from being out of shape, emotionally exhausted and best of all financially stressed out. Find out how you can make proper conscious decisions that can fix your financial condition too.

Decision 1: Make a Careful Choice of What to Focus On

You have plenty to keep your focus and attention, but what are the more important aspects? You do not want to dwell on the past as this will just mean you are unhappy. You have to look at the things that are happening right now. This also applies to Forex investments. Perhaps what you need to focus on right now is Forex investments in order to create a better financial condition.
If that is true then you need to determine what patterns you see, where other investors have their funds, and if there is anything worth investing in. Whether you are focusing on improving your entire life or just your Forex investments you need to know what is most important to focus on in the current moment.
There are a lot of things that might be holding you back from investing with your real money in the Forex market. Perhaps you have trouble with family, friends, or your health. You need to get these issues solved before you invest. Additionally, you need to determine what will take away all of the emotional turmoil that is plaguing you so that you can invest wisely and not on emotions.
No matter whether you focus on your life or just on your financial conditions with Forex investing you have to find an emotional well being and habits that you can keep to. It takes time. You also have to realize that you cannot control everything so when you make the decision to focus on Forex investing you have to do so with the knowledge that you will have both losses and wins.

How can I become rich guide

Henry Ford once said, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” If you want to change your life for the better then you have to start now with 2015. How can I become rich is a question everyone asks and there is an answer. But it takes dedication to the following 15 actions. You will have to do some things differently than you have in the previous years. It is important to push through regardless of the outside forces such as the economy that have set you or the world back. Here are 15 ways to answer how can I become rich

Become your own boss

This doesn’t have to be literal in the sense that you start your own company. Actually it is about being the boss in your life. You cannot fix an issue unless you are completely aware of it. For financial purposes you have to know what money is coming in and where it is all going. As soon as you have an understanding of your situation as it is right now you can fix the leaks often with simple solutions. You are going to care more about your financial situation than any adviser. Also, LiteForex got a solutions for entrepreneurs that have a desire to work on white label basis: http://www.liteforex.com/partners/programs/whitelabel/

10 reasons for why you will never become rich

you start reading this, you’ll probably think it’s not about you. You might be financially successful. But is this merit yours? Are you sure that one of the reasons below won't play you a dirty trick tomorrow? - See more at:

1. You are constantly complaining but you do not act Do you really think anyone is interested in listening to why you fail all the time? If you want to change work do it! Find a better-paid job where the basement won't stick.

2. Common sense? It's not about you Tell me how you managed to add 50 km to a 15 km trip. It could work once as anyone makes mistakes. But you can’t systematically fool the ones who pay you! And what's more important, you fool yourself all the time too. The tale about "smoking the last cigarette with friends and then going home" always turns into popping out for a new packet and beer.

6 GREAT PODCAST FOR WRITERS

These days there’s a podcast for everything and writing is no exception. It seems that some writers are taking a break from the pen and picking up the microphone instead. This is great news for the rest of us, as podcasts are great way to stay informed on a specific area while on the go.
Below are 6 great podcasts related to writing that we’ve enjoyed:
Writing Excuses: This podcast covers a wide range of writing related themes. This is a weekly podcast brought to you by Brandon Sanderson, Dan Wells and Howard Tayler.
The podcast episodes are available in mp3 format for downloading and can also be playing online via Writing Excuses website.
Grammar Girl - Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing: The title says it all. Brought to you by Mignon Fogarty, this is a regularly updated podcast that can only be played online.
I Should Be Writing: Focusing on fiction based writing topics; Mur Lafferty provides new podcast episodes about once a week. Podcast episodes are available for download, online streaming and via iTunes.
Mur also has recorded a popular podiobook called Playing for Keeps, which is available for free download.
Writers on Writing: Brought to you by Barbara DeMarco-Barrett and Marrie Stone, this weekly show is actually a radio program that is later released as a podcast. You can download the podcast via their website, listen to them live at kuci.org or even listen to it on your radio if you happen to live in Orange County, CA, at 88.9.

WRITING FICTION; BE THE AUTHOR YOU DREAM.

here is a lot to be said about "breaking the mold", although it is not a common phrase among writers it implies the same thing, that is Do Something Different. How many times have you heard writers talk about "writers block" or maybe you have even experienced it yourself. It is common and it is real and if you haven't been afflicted, you likely will.
So ... what can you do?  Well lot of things. Most experts will tell you to simply walk away from your work for a while, and this normally means overnight at a minimum, sometimes an extended "vacation" from your work is needed. The reason that the overnight break is so important is that your brain has a chance to rejuvenate itself overnight, the same way muscles do. Any athlete knows that muscle builds when it is at rest, it appears that so too does the brain.
But just like athletes that have learned that other forms of exercise of different muscles can still keep them moving ahead while resting other muscles, the same is true for writers. In writers case, moving away from a current piece and moving, at least temporarily to another piece gives that part of the brain a rest while it fires up another side.

Five ways to give your writing career a fresh start

Whether it's the New Year, the new school year, or simply a new you, there are times when writers tend to start over or re-focus on their writing careers. Here are five ways to give your freelance writing career a fresh start.

1.  Clean Out Bookmarks, RSS, or Other Blog Feeds

As a freelance writer who works virtually, your blog and writing friends are your virtual water cooler. Make sure the blogs you visit regularly are nurturing you. Do you get actionable steps? Do you find valuable freelance writing jobs? Are you active in the genre? Consider adding one or two new blog feeds, perhaps in a genre you'd like to explore, or maybe the blog of a editor or publisher, as opposed to writer's blogs. The new perspective is very helpful!

2.  Polish Off Your Reading List

I'm not sure I "believe in but I do know that unread piles of books, magazines and papers sitting around my office make me nervous. And anxious. A fresh start entails catching up on your reading list. Magazines like Writer and Poets & Writer are excellent selections to read monthly for fresh ideas and new instruction, but they don't do you any good if they pile up and cause anxiety. Stay caught up! It feels so much better.

3.  Polish Up Your Resume

Update your resume so that it's ready to send off when you see that juicy copy writing gig. Add not only freelance writing jobs that you've recently completed, but also style systems that you've mastered, books that you've reviewed, or new skills that you've learned.

4.  Pare Down Your Pitch List

Many writers have some kind of list or way that they track ideas they'd like to pitch to magazines or newspapers. What would happen if you pared down that list? What would happen if you concentrated solely on your very best ideas? How might that improve your career?

5.  Catch Up All Recording Activities

Whenever a writer asks me how to set rates, I insist that they know about how many hours a project takes them. If you haven't already done it, set up a simple spreadsheet in which you record project and hours. Of course, all writers should also have a record of expenses out versus revenue in. Catch up all of these recording activities so that your new start is as fresh as can be!

Four Steps To Become More Creative

Creativity is the name of the game. Without it, writing fiction would be very difficult...okay, impossible. So how does one keep the creative juices flowing? Here is my four-step program to help you stay creative:

  1. Stay busy - For most people this is not a difficult step to follow. Everyone in this day and age is busy, but I'm not talking about your writing life in this instance. I'm talking about your life outside of writing. Find things that take your mind as far away from writing as you can.
  2. Reflect - When you're not busy either writing or living, take the time to sit quietly and reflect on your day. Go over the smallest details. As you reflect, pay attention to your breathing and get to the point where you're actively taking in and letting out breaths slowly. If this sounds like meditation, you're right. Some people don't think they have time to meditate, so I like reframe it as breathing. If you don't have time to breathe, then you're in trouble.

Preventing corruption

R. Klitgaard[18] postulates that corruption will occur if the corrupt gain is greater than the penalty multiplied by the likelihood of being caught and prosecuted:
Corrupt gain > Penalty × Likelihood of being caught and prosecuted
The degree of corruption will then be a function of the degree of monopoly and discretion in deciding who should get how much on the one hand and the degree to which this activity is accountable and transparent on the other hand. Still, these equations (which should be understood in a qualitative rather than a quantitative manner) seem to be lacking one aspect: a high degree of monopoly and discretion accompanied by a low degree of transparency does not automatically lead to corruption without any moral weakness or insufficient integrity. Also, low penalties in combination with a low probability of being caught will only lead to corruption if people tend to neglect ethics and moral commitment. The original Klitgaard equation has therefore been amended by C. Stephan[19] into:

scales of corruption

Here are the scales of corruption According to Wikipedia.

Corruption can occur on different scales. There is corruption that occurs as small favors between a small number of people (petty corruption), corruption that affects the government on a large scale (grand corruption), and corruption that is so prevalent that it is part of the every day structure of society, including corruption as one of the symptoms of organized crime (systemic corruption)

Petty corruption

Petty corruption occurs at a smaller scale and within established social frameworks and governing norms. Examples include the exchange of small improper gifts or use of personal connections to obtain favours. This form of corruption is particularly common in developing countries and where public servants are significantly underpaid.

How to Self Publish with Google eBooks

Google has finally announced officially its Google Books for the Android Marketplace. This comes 2 months after its venture started into eBooks, and the Google eBookstore.  With over three million titles available, Google is now set to be able to rival bookstore giant Amazon and to take on Apple and the iPhone.
To make its new venture even more appealing to everyone, Google ebooks and Google eBookstores will operate with all eBook formats.
All this makes the Google eBookstore another great market for self-publishers to distribute and sell their ebooks through.
How will a self publisher be able to jump on publishing with Google eBooks while it is hot?  First, you will need to create an account with Google (if you don’t already have one) and sign up with Google Books.  Once you have done this, and agreed to terms to allow your books to be listed, you will be allowed to join eBookstore and become a Google Books Partner.

Lulu.com: Free Self-Publishing

For a self publishing service we recommend Lulu.com. Unlike other self publishing companies, lulu’s service is completely based online. What this means is that you can have your book published and ready to be mailed to you in 15 minutes. There’s no waiting for days or weeks just to have your book files reviewed like other self publishing companies.
What we really like is that you can add your book to their market place and have it ready to sell for free. When someone orders your book, lulu prints and ships it to them and you receive a commission. This is great way to test market your book without spending a dime.

Tips And Tricks To Make Yourself Write

he secret to writing has long been known: constant practice, and yet despite this seeming common logical notion, maintaining consistency has been the challenge of many of today’s writers. And while many people suggest “the one” strategy that will have you writing all the time, the truth is different things work for different writers.
That said, we’ve listed a set of different suggestions on what might work.
Write here. Write now.
Stop beating yourself up over what you didn’t do yesterday and start working on what you need to do right now.
Try changing things up; if before you wrote on the computer, try going back to basics and write with a pen and paper. You’ll be surprised how liberating that can be. Alternatively, you could try printing your work onto flash cards to organize your process of thought.
Temptations: take yourself out of the equation, which means disconnecting from the Internet and turning your back to your ringing cellphone. And if you combine this tip with the one above, you’ll find yourself being a bit more productive too.
Nothing sets your creative juices flowing than a time limit. Put yourself on the clock and you know you can’t give in to temptations during the timer’s duration. Of course when it buzzes, you can stop and start doing something else. If you start with 30 minutes of writing and 10 minutes of break, that’s a great way to set things up.
Making Writing A Habit
Set up a time to write; either it’s the first thing you start your day with before doing anything else (aside perhaps, from caffeine), or it’s another time but be consistent.
After you’re done writing, make a mental (or written) note on just what you will be doing in your next session.
Have a work desk where you do nothing but write, and set it up accordingly. This will be your dedicated writing space.
Focus more on how long you’re going to write for, as opposed to the words or pages produces. What matters more is getting into the habit of writing and thinking, because some days will be really productive and some won’t. Don’t be disheartened, just keep at it.
Maintain a journal or a graph or a chart that tracks your progress; this will help you know what you’ve accomplished along with just how much time you’ve been giving to the craft. Maybe try putting it into your day planer and/or calendar as an appointment. But be sure to keep the appointment.
Try writing with somebody and make an appointment of writing at the same time every day, which can be turned into a lasting commitment over the phone, text or email after or before starting.
Finally, try writing down a list of things you would like to cover in your work which doesn’t have to be anything fancy; it can be something to help you keep yourself on track. When you’re stuck, try some other point. Crossing a point of the list will give you a tremendous list of accomplishment, trust me.
But whatever you choose to do, keep in mind that the most important thing is that you keep writing. Don’t stop. Persistence is key.

The Key Difference Between Winners And Losers In Business

Are winners in business just more talented? Or luckier than the average person?
Most people believe yes.
But Professor Carol Dweck of Stanford University has proof to the contrary. After over a decade of research her team has shown that in the long term, consistent success does not largely hinge on IQ or luck.
It relies on a particular type of mindset. If you develop this mindset (and it can certainly be developed) your chances of achieving uncommon success are high, regardless of your field of endeavor.
Dweck calls that winning mindset the ‘Growth Mindset’, and the essence of Growth Mindset is as follows.
Growth Mindsetters have a core belief that their talents are not fixed. Therefore they are confident that anything they choose to do can be done better. Basically, they have a deep belief that their potential is virtually limitless, as long as they do two things.
1. Consistently focus on getting better at that particular area.
2. Try hard at it.
Effort, focus and belief are at the core of how a Growth Mindsetter thinks.
As a result, they may start off not being particularly good at something, but by concerted action they quickly get better at it. ‘Excellence through constant improvement’ could be the credo of a Growth Mindset oriented person.
With this attitude, Professor Dweck showed that even people with lower than average IQ’s often succeeded at a higher level than more intelligent people who didn’t dedicate themselves to life long improvement.
A startling notion, I’m sure you will agree.
After all, if success over time is not about luck or inherent talent, then that squarely puts the pressure on each of us to commit to continual learning and effort to endlessly get better.
Do you have enough of a Growth Mindset? If your honest answer is No, it’s time to get to work.
"She's a winner!" He's a real loser". We frequently hear people
labeled as winners or losers. We seem to instinctively know the
difference.

Many years ago, I saved a poem that discusses the difference
between winners and losers. I don't know who wrote it, but I'll tip
my hat to her or him, because the poem captured the essence of
character that distinguishes winners from losers. I'll share it with
you now with my thoughts.
